Trivia
William Randolph Hearst was so angered by the film that he accused Orson Welles of being a Communist in order to keep the film from being released.

Cinematography (Framing, angles, camera movement):
In the film the character who's flashback it is, is sat in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. In a couple of shots Charles Kane's face is in the shadows to symbolize that he is sinister,

Mine-en-scene:
The sets were very large and often used for optical illusions and to make certain characters giant and others small. The same sets were used for multiple scenes and re-dressed to look different.

Character movement / direction:
Often in the film the character will move towards the back of the shot before moving back to the front, this if often accompanied by something large in the background (a fireplace or a window) this is to make the character appear smaller then they actually are.

Special effects (transitions, compositing, animation, etc):
Often in the film they mask certain transactions with fades, for example when the camera moved through the window in the ceiling, they covered it up by having two flashes of lightning. They also often filmed a scene twice, once with only one actor in the shot and again with the other actor and then put both of the footage's together to create the illusion of both being in one scene. This is composite editing.
