Research and Planning: Cutting Hedge Community Project

Research

You much complete comprehensive research into your allocated topic area and also general research about each of the areas being covered. Use a range of sources to explore:
  • ·         GYBC and their role with this project (e.g., council properties and property maintenance)
  • ·         MESH
  • ·         Cutting Hedge & Voluntary Norfolk
  • ·         East Norfolk Sixth Form College (resources and community work)

Great Yarmouth Borough Council helps by having three neighbourhood offices -
  • Comeunity on Kings Street,
  • MESH on the Shrublands site
  • Make It Happen at the Kings Centre.

At each of those offices they have a team of people who engage with local people, listen to ideas, link people into services and activities as well as offer practical support to start community projects.

Also GYBC helps by offering people to join their garden maintenance scheme (subject to conditions) for a weekly charge by completing their garden maintenance scheme application form. The weekly charges are £5 per week for a small garden and £8 per week for a large garden (average maintenance up to 30 minutes). GYB Services will visit peoples homes every three weeks between March and November subject to weather conditions and mow their grass and prune their hedges and shrubs.

MESH is Gorleston’s Neighbourhood Programme aim to assist local people to become more personally resilient and less reliant on services. They cover all subjects that affect everyday life in Gorleston from parking to befriending. They also work with a variety of organisations and partners to bring services into Gorleston. MESH supports Shrublands Trust, the trust is based at Shrublands Youth and Adult Centre, on Magdalen Way in Gorleston and runs a wide variety of activities for local people, including seated exercise, circuit training, walking football and youth club for 6-12 year olds.

Voluntary Norfolk promote, support and develop volunteering and the work of voluntary organisations. They aim to encourage recognition and understanding of the value of the sector in the achievement of individual well-being and fair society. They enable people to contribute their time, skills and talents for their own and for the community’s benefit, together with supporting the growth and development of voluntary organisations and community groups.

East Norfolk Sixth Form College made a video for MESH/Cutting Hedge by getting interviews from people who are currently working with them and also from pupils who actually made the video. Also at ENSFC there is a lady named Jane who has contact with MESH, furthermore there are courses at the college that help people learn particular skills.
